Session Prep, Tonal Balance

The Concept: For my first comprehensive multitrack mixing project, I intentionally selected a rock song, a genre completely outside of my usual comfort zone. The goal was to approach the mix with fresh ears and rely strictly on technical fundamentals rather than familiar genre habits. This project was a deep dive into the clinical process of balancing a dense arrangement from the ground up.

The Process: Working within Pro Tools, the foundation of this mix actually started before any audio was processed. I focused heavily on professional session hygiene: meticulous file management, standardized track naming, color coding, and proper routing. Once the session was prepped, my workflow centered around achieving proper balance, blend, and timbre. I leaned heavily on subtractive EQ to carve out space for overlapping frequencies and applied surgical compression to control the aggressive dynamics of the rock instrumentation.

The Challenge: The most difficult aspect of this project was unlearning prior amateur habits. I had to strip away my preconceived notions of mixing and rebuild my methodology to match professional, industry standards. Working closely with my instructor, I learned to listen critically to frequency relationships rather than just randomly pushing faders, ultimately bridging the gap between creative intuition and technical precision.
